What is DBT?

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is a structured therapeutic method considered to be the primary treatment option for people diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and is frequently prescribed by psychiatrists and therapists for  the treatment of certain eating disorders, depression, PTSD and a growing number of other conditions and disorders.

In it's conventional form, DBT is provided over the course of 6 months and consists of 4 components:

  1.  Individual DBT Therapy at least once weekly with a DBT trained therapist.
  2.  DBT Group attended weekly for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
  3.  Phone Coaching available for clients who need support in the midst of a real-life situation.
  4.  DBT Consultation Team attended weekly be the individual DBT therapists and the group moderator.

Benefits of DBT

Dozens of studies have concluded that DBT treatment (Individual DBT therapy along with DBT Group) is an effective treatment for a variety of populations and conditions.  Research has show benefits for all ages, genders, sexual orientations, races and ethnicities.  Specific benefits demonstrated include:

  • Reduce or eliminate self-destructive behavior
  • Stabilize extreme emotions
  • Manage stress and anxiety
  • Improve social functioning

Questions to ask when looking for a DBT Provider.

Before you begin DBT treatment, ask your therapist the following questions:

  1. Did you receive intensive training from Behavioral Tech?
  2. Do you offer both DBT Skills Group and Individual DBT Therapy?
  3. How many years have you been practicing DBT?
  4. Do you participate in a DBT consultation team?
